Being the perfectionist, teacher and control freak I am, when I was pregnant with Kaiden I read a lot of articles and reviews on particular baby products, and what I should be buying. I don't think people realise how many baby products or items are out there until you start shopping for a baby haha. When I would tell Shaun that we would need a particular item, he would reply with "how many items does this little human need", and the truth is, they really don't need a lot, but there are 5 items that I have absolutely LOVED, and definitely suggest buying them or adding them to your baby registry list. In no particular order:
1. Baby Swing - This device has been fantastic. Although not exactly the cheapest item you will buy for bubs, it's definitely been great for Kaiden, and if you can purchase it when it's on special, then it's even better :) The swing is automatic, and runs off batteries. Which, by the way, we put batteries in the swing a few days after Kaiden was born, and the batteries are still going (we use the swing multiple times a day). The swing we have specifically is called the Ingenuity Swing N Go portable swing from Baby Bunting (we got it on sale for $140). It has 5 speed settings and can play music also. Kaiden has loved it since we brought him home. He sleeps in it, just sits in it, or swings in it. It is a great item to use when you need to have a shower (I put it at the bathroom door when I shower), put on some washing or just sit on the lounge without a baby on top of you.
2. Sophie the Giraffe
Now, honestly, when I first saw the price of these teething toys, I thought it was a rip off. It's a giraffe, that's it, doesn't do anything but squeak. I had also read some reviews about how mould was found inside the giraffe after being used for a while by teething babies due to the moisture and water that can transfer into an air hole. Kaiden is currently going through the early stages of teething, and occasionally does put it in his mouth, but most of the time, he just holds it, particularly during car rides. We love Sophie! We use it when we take photos so Kaiden smiles, to make him happy when he is upset, or just as a comforter in the car. We also got this from Baby Bunting.
3. BIBS dummy
These have been a lifesaver! Kaiden wouldn't take a dummy for about the first 2 1/2 months. He just wanted to be on me. He wasn't even hungry, just sucking as a comfort thing. I didn't want for him to be dependent on the dummy, but I thought a dummy may give my poor nipples a break! I had purchased some BIBS dummies from a Baby Expo. Kaiden seemed to spit out every other brand of dummy, except for these ones. I think it's because the shape of the teat is very similar to that of the nipple, and thus it was harder for Kaiden to recognise the difference. It's been great for car rides, or just when he has needed some extra settling after being fed and changed. You can purchase these dummies from different stores online :)
4. Baby Shusher
Now I definitely thought this was a gimmick! What's wrong with parents just shushing their babies to sleep? Well once you start doing it, you will realise it's not that easy to shush past 2 minutes. Our friends gave us the Baby Shusher, and it has been game changer in car rides. Sometimes Kaiden can be pretty unsettled in the car, particularly if he's overtired or at night. Then we started using this item, and it puts him to sleep, without your lips feeling like they are going to fall off haha. We have literally turned the shusher on before Kaiden has even got into the car, and he's already been asleep. AMAZING!! Buy this now. I understand why all the new-born photographers use them. Just don't knock it before you try it! I hope it works just as well for you as it does for us :)
5. Car capsule that clicks into your pram
Now this is definitely a MUST HAVE! We have a Britax Safe N Sound Unity Isofix Capsule, which clips directly into our Redsbaby pram. This has been great as when Kaiden falls asleep in the car on the way to the shops or dinner, he can stay asleep in the capsule while we are out. Tonight was a perfect example - he fell asleep in the car on the way to dinner, he stayed asleep in his capsule the whole time we were there, and then the whole way home as well. We didn't need to clip and unclip him in multiple times, instead the whole capsule can just come out of the car and straight onto the pram. Great invention. This is especially
good for when you don't want to wake up your baby continuously. Add it to the list :)
Of course, these items may not work for you, but I really hope they do. In my opinion, I would definitely recommend purchasing them, but do your research and find out what works best for you :)
Sending love always,
xx Jessica
